My FitBit brings out my competitive side

I've never thought of myself as a particularly competitive person.  I'd never last on "The Bachelor" because I refuse to fight another girl over a guy, no matter how much I like him.  Don't get me wrong -- I like to win, but I don't necessarily think it's something that creates a strong drive in me.

Enter FitBit challenges.

I'm currently in three different Workweek Hustles, where you see who can get the most steps in the workweek.  I was invited to a fourth, but at the time, I was also in two Weekend Warrior competitions and FitBit only allows you to be in five contests at a time, so I missed out.

I don't really want to admit how many times a day/week I check the standings in these contests.  It's worse if I'm in the lead or fighting for the lead.  If I have the potential to win, I'm obsessive about checking it to see how many steps I have on the second place person, and if I don't think it's enough, I'll make an excuse to walk around and get some steps in.  That's not so much the case this week.  Even though I've been decent with my daily step totals, I'm not currently winning any of my contests.

Even though that bottom one says I'm ahead of Wes, it fails to tell you I'm behind Theresia and Angela.

But that's OK.  It's not like there's a prize at the end of these contests.  Except pride. And a lot of mileage on my feet.  And that's really the point. I do these challenges to encourage me to move more.  To park further away from the entrance. To take the longer route back to my desk after using the restroom. Even if I'm not first, I can still see how many steps I have for the week and that's enough to encourage a few more walks or a run.

Do you have any kind of activity or fitness tracker? If so, how has it changed your habits?

This is not a sponsored post. I purchased my FitBit (I've actually bought two in the last five years), and am not being compensated in any way for this post.

  1. That's so awesome. I wish I had more friends with fitbits to join contests. but honestly, I have a hard enough time keeping mine charged and paying attention to it until it's bed time and I'm setting the silent alarm! But what annoys me about the fitbit (I only have the most basic one) is that it only counts steps, but not calories burned during other activities (i.e. biking). I guess you probably need to get the more advanced fitbit to get that kind of tracking.

  4. I'm addicted to my FitBit. I haven't done challenges yet, but yesterday, I forgot to put my FitBit back on after my shower. I did quite a few things before I realized it was missing. It felt as if nothing counted since my steps weren't being tracked! Haha! What's your user name? We can be friends!
