WLJ: Listen to your body

I had a scary moment last Thursday when I was working out.

I thought I could handle kettlebell and total body burn back-to-back.  Each class is 30 minutes long.  No big deal, right?

Wrong.

Kettlebell went fine. Then, halfway through total body burn, I noticed I was lightheaded, and when we laid down to do chest flies, I realized the ceiling was spinning.  I decided this was not a good thing.  So I sat up and took a few breaths while the class went on to the next exercise.  The trainer asked if I was ok, and I told him I was just a little dizzy.  He told me to take a break and get a drink of water.  As I got up, I could hardly walk straight.  I felt drunk.  I didn't get my equilibrium back before the class was over.

I have never felt like that.  And I hope I don't again.  I recovered, but ... wow ... I definitely overdid it.  I felt really embarrassed, but the trainer said he was glad I recognized I wasn't feeling well.  He said he's seen a lot of people try and keep going and ending up fainting or passing out, which isn't good for anyone.  And another woman I talked to said she had a similar experience when she tried to do too many classes at once.

Yep, I'm gonna slow down. I will probably continue with kettlebell and total body burn, but instead of doing them back-to-back, I'll do one on Tuesday nights and one on Thursday.

Bottom line -- listen to your body.

Weight-loss goal: 40 lbs.
This week's progress: -2.6 lbs.
Progress to date: -16.2 lbs.
Non-scale victory: I have not had any alcohol in two weeks.  It's not that I drink a ton, but I usually have a beer or a glass of wine at some point during the week.  Not lately though.  I haven't even really wanted it, not even when I was in my brother's bar Sunday night with an option of free beer.

  1. proud of you for resisting alcohol! joe has sent several emails with facts about just how bad it is for you. he does suggest that if you are going to drink at a function/outing, to skip the beer and get a mixed drink and nurse it. people tend to get multiple beers in one night, but are more likely to take their time drinking a mixed drink and not order a 2nd. i thought that was really interested and something good to keep in mind if you are going out with friends any time soon. :) you are doing AMAZING and i am so proud of you!!

  2. I just started working out again last night for the first time since October (I was in a wreck on 10/31, I just got cleared to workout again). I am having to go slow. I totally agree with that you have to listen to your body. Even last night doing something that was so "simple", I could tell I didn't need to over do it. Glad you are okay!

Best of luck with your goals!!

    :)
