Book Club Friday - Now entering Hogwarts

I legitimately avoided the Harry Potter series when they were in their peak days.  But several friends kept insisting I should check them out.  I finally caved when my temporary roommate, Courtney, talked about them when I was staying with her.  I found the series on audiobook at my local library and decided to give them a chance.

I breezed through the first two books in the series in just a few weeks. (I was doing a lot of driving.) The narrator was fantastic, and the characters were fun.  The plot was pretty interesting too.  I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next.  I know these books were written for young adults, but I think they really are suitable for legit adults as well.  It's a fun escape from the world.

So far, I'm glad I picked up the Potter series.  I definitely will be looking to get my hands on the rest of the series.  And I think I'll prefer to read them since I know the books get longer, and I'm not doing as much driving these days.  Thank goodness.

Have you ever picked up a book/series to check out the hype?
Did you love it or regret it?

  1. I LOVED Harry Potter, still do. I have read all of the books twice and some of them 3 times, and also the add-on books! I think JK Rowling is amazing. The one I didn't get into was Twilight. I read the books because I was working at a book store when they became popular but I didn't get the big hype. I'm glad I read them just to see but I didn't think they were great.

  2. Hmm, I never thought to listen to the audiobooks... maybe I'll see if they have them through the library so I can listen on my run. I loved Harry Potter, I got into it when the first 2 had already come out and I stalked the series through the end, it was fun. :)

  3. First Chance will now think you are awesome. Wait until you meet Sirius Black!!! There was only one book I didn't like. I keep saying I am going to read them again...as soon as I finish the ones I have started that I haven't finished. I only have 12 or so.

  4. I loved all the Harry Potter books. I have to admit that I was sad to see them end.

  5. Wow, I envy you the chance to read them for the first time! I love those books, but I'll never get that same feeling again of not really knowing what's going to happen.

  6. I started reading them when the third book had just come out, or slightly before. Right around the year 2000 or 2001. My uncle was reading them to my cousin as a bedtime story and he told me, "You've got to read these! They're not just for kids." I liked the first two, but I wasn't really hooked until the third one.

  7. I actually started the Harry Potter series before it got really huge. Myself, my mom, and my brother all read them, but my dad refused to. He still saw the movies, just that he was making a stand by refusing to read them. My mom did wind up convincing him to listen to the books on tape, and I think he did finally read them all.

And I think my favorite is probably book 6, but think that they get better with each book. So you definitely have some good reading ahead of you!

  8. Found you at Book Club Friday (I'm usually a few days behind, I live abroad!)! I also got into these before everyone else, and then was so excited about the series that I didn't care that everyone else jumped on the bandwagon. Now that I live abroad I carry them on my Kindle. Because they're my favorites, I find it comforting to have them with me when I get stressed or need something familiar. Glad you're also enjoying them!

  9. I'm definitely a Harry Potter fan! But I love the 6th and 7th books the best. The 7th book has so much energy and action in it, and it finally gives you answers to a lot of questions. I think she did a great job connecting things and I remember staying up until 4am to finish reading it in one day haha :) I've read it 4 times total, so good!

  10. I started Harry Potter when I was in 6th grade and absolutely adored it. I still go back and reread every once in a while. My favorite book is #3, followed by #5. I cannot wait to introduce them to my kiddos :)
