If you really knew me ...

[from pinterest]
... you'd know I was painfully shy as a child.  I didn't like to talk in class or in front of people at all. I remember playing "Who Stole the Cookie From the Cookie Jar?" in 1st grade and when it got to be my turn, I would absolutely NOT speak up to continue the game. My entire class had to stay in from recess because I wouldn't keep the game going. Oops.  I've overcome that shyness, obviously.  I credit my years as a newspaper reporter for helping cure me of this shyness because you can't be shy in the journalism world.

... you'd know I hate to sit with my back to the door in a restaurant/public place.  Sometimes it's unavoidable, so I learn to deal, but I don't like it.

... you'd know my cats have middle names. I'm a total cat lady, and I'm completely unapologetic about it.

... you'd know I am in the middle of a bit of an identity crisis in terms of my career.  I studied communications and thought I'd always be a writer. Now I'm working in insurance, and while it's interesting and I like it, I have no idea who I am anymore.

... you'd know I have a very tender heart.  My feelings get hurt very easily.  I know the hurt isn't always intentional, but it's still real to me.  Fortunately, I've gotten better at controlling my reactions and displaying my emotions in recent years.

... you'd know MLB's Opening Day is more of a holiday to me than Valentine's Day. (And please don't tell me that's just because I'm single ... it's not.)  In fact, I'm contemplating using PTO on March 31 so I can stay home and watch my beloved Texas Rangers open up the 2014 season against the Philadelphia Phillies.

... you'd know I've been to nearly 200 concerts.  I count big arena events as well as little club shows.  I haven't added to my total in a few months and I'm starting to feel the itch.

... you'd know I can't resist a cupcake.  They are my kryptonite. Especially the fluffernutter one from Scratch Cupcakery.

... you'd know it took me two times to finally complete Couch to 5K four years ago.  And now I'm looking at doing eight races this year, including at least one 10K and a half-marathon.  Never say never.

... you'd know I love spending time with friends but I also need some time alone.  I am very much an introvert and thanks to this book, I no longer see that as a negative thing.

... you'd know I love to sing but only in private.  I think I do a killer rendition of Ingrid Michaelson's "The Way I Am" but the world will probably never hear it.

... you'd know I'm a bit of a beer snob.  I'll drink domestic brews if they're free or I'm tailgating (therefore going to be drinking or a long time), otherwise give me a craft beer.  Some of my favorites -- Fixed Gear by Lakefront Brewery (Milwaukee, WI), Undead Red's Belgian Cousin by 515 Brewing Company (Des Moines, IA), Blonde Fatale by Peace Tree Brewing Company (Knoxville, IA), Anchor Steam by Anchor Brewing Company (San Francisco, CA), and Suede Imperial Porter by Stone Brewing Company (Escondido, CA) ... just to name a few.

How many of these can you relate to?
Leave me a comment telling me something about you!

  1. What are your cats' middle names? I call Scout "CROSS CREEK SCOUT" when I'm mad at him (his AKC name).
I have a student in my class who is painfully shy. Probably to the point of a clinical diagnosis. I'm supposed to write down what she says and when she says it, but with 21 other kids, I don't have time to sit down and coax answers out of her. She'll talk to other kids, but not if the attention is focused on her. It's an odd situation.

  3. So thanks to this post I'm even FURTHER convinced that we would be great friends in 'real life' because I can realte to so, so many of these. Number 1? Me as a kid. I was thinking the other day about how I would hope NOT to win things because I didn't want my name to be called & have to go up to the front of the class or the stage. I, too, have a very tender heart & I just hope I can be like you and FINALLY complete my C25K THIS time and be running races next year :) Loved this.

  4. I'm with you on the shy thing, and the sitting where you can see the door. And the running, I think I did C25K 3 times!

Definitely love my alone time. :)

  5. Nate is the same way with his back to the door. If it faces a TV, even better, haha.

    I'm with you - I can't resist a cupcake. My fave!

  6. Craft beer! I live super close to a ton of wineries but give me a good micro any day. Rogue has a hopyard/farm on the out skirts of my town and it is the best place to hang out during the summer!
