When someone adores your imperfections

"Good Will Hunting" is high on my list of most-watched movies. This quote, in particular, is a favorite:

The romantic in me loved this notion -- the idea that someone could love the things that you (and maybe others) saw as flaws or weaknesses.

The cynic in me knew this was probably crap.

Not too long ago, I attended a bridal shower/bachelorette for a close friend. My favorite activity was this little survey and questionnaire thing. The groom-to-be had filled out his answers about the bride, and we wanted to see what she thought he would say.  It was fun and eye-opening to see how well they knew each other after a few years together.

One of the questions was: "What physical feature of hers do you like best?"
His answer: "Her big blue eyes."

Such a simple response and maybe almost cliche.  But I heard it differently and swooned. Why?  Because my friend has always complained about her eyes. In her opinion, they are too big. I believe she's even called them "cow eyes."

Let me get this straight -- he loves the very thing she hates about herself.

Who knew that was real? I thought those scenarios only existed in romance novels and movies.

I have plenty of flaws and quirks. But we'll stick with the physical for this post.

So what's my least favorite physical feature?  My cheeks.

Look at them ...

OK. That's enough photos of me.

But do you see what I mean? They take up some serious real estate on my face.

I was tormented about them in high school. A few of the jocks constantly referred to me as "Chipmunk Girl."

A guy I liked in college told me they made me look chubby. A simple comment made harsher by my feelings for him.

Even now, as an adult, I am still self-conscious about my cheeks. They're so big. Sometimes I minimize my smiles in photos so they don't stand out too much.

What's your least favorite physical feature?
Have you ever received a compliment on it?

  2. I LOVE your cheeks! They are fabulous. I can be really self conscious about this area above my cheeks which, to me, looks like there are really deep crevices. It's a family trait, I have realized, and some days it looks deeper than others, but my husband thinks I'm crazy. When you find the right person for you, they see all of these "flawed" things about you as some of the best parts. IF you can love someone for their flaws, then that is really the best scenario. Another example, my husband hates his nose and has talked about getting it fixed. Part of the reason is because he can't breathe through it properly and part of it is because he doesn't like the way it looks. I tell him constantly that I love his nose, and if he got it fixed, to help him breathe even, it would change his face and he wouldn't look like him... That may sound mean... But my long winded point is that often our flaws are what make us beautiful and who we are! Who would recognize your beautiful face without those gorgeous cheeks?!

  4. OMG! I love your cheeks! They remind me of Lauren Graham's. I hate my big forehead, small lips, crooked teeth, freckles... I could go on and on, but I came to terms with it years ago. It's just how I look and I can't do anything about it. Someone will love you for exactly who you are!

  5. Are you kidding? You have awesome cheeks. I swear they are perfect, rosy cheeks. I guess that just proves your point. It is weird what we love about a person but I think when it is the right person, the things that you love are stuff nobody else would notice. I always dated men with small hands. My husband has the biggest hands I have ever seen. I love his hands. It's a weird thing to say but it is what it is. I am asking him what his favorite thing about me is because I have no clue....and I probably don't really want to know. :)

  6. I totally love your cheeks, too! They are happy cheeks!

I don't really have a least favorite physical feature. I'm really not a fan of anything attached to me.
