Show Us Your Books: April 2018

Life According to Steph

I was all about the crime reads this month. It was a bit draining at times, but I couldn't stop reading. All of the titles were fantastic and kept me intrigued the whole way through.

I never thought I'd find a book/series that would tie in both of my favorite reading genres -- suspense and romance. But I did!! It took me a bit to get into Silent Run. Probably because I'd just finished a trio of romance novels and switching gears to a suspense novel was a challenge for my brain. But once I kept reading, it didn't take long for me to be completely engrossed in Sarah's story. I wanted to know who was chasing her when she ran her car off a cliff and woke up with amnesia. She couldn't remember who she was or anything about her life, except that she had a daughter and had no idea where the child was. Jake walked into her hospital room claiming to be the father of her daughter, but Sarah had no memories of him. She didn't even know if she could trust him. She didn't know who to trust and that picture became a mixture of muddled and clear as her memory began coming back in pieces. She has to rely on Jake through all this and slowly she remembers and rediscovers her love for him. I loved this story and can't wait to pick up the second one in the series.

I don't know when I purchased this book. I found it while digging through the titles on my Kindle and decided it was a good one to follow "Silent Run." Indeed, it was. Rachel is the daughter of a detective, who is struggling to find a serial killer that is striking almost literally in their backyard. As Rachel navigates young adulthood and all the related struggles, she also feels compelled to help her father catch the killer, which gets her and her sister in a bit of trouble. It's a bit of a heavy read but has a really satisfying ending.

This book probably jumped onto lots of reading lists a few weeks ago when they announced they had a break in this very old case. I was about 2/3 of the way through this when they arrested the Golden State Killer. I think that news gave me a much different perspective on the end of the book. Especially the letter Michelle wrote to the then-unknown killer at the end. It was haunting. I really enjoyed the entire book. Michelle's dedication to (or obsession with) the case was impressive. Her research was incredibly thorough and well-done. I'm so glad they finished the book even after she was gone.

After such a heavy month of reading in April, I'll definitely be attempting to lighten it up a bit in May.

  1. Oh, I loved I'll Be Gone in the Dark. I read it a month or so ago but my review will be up next week I believe. I'm glad you liked it too. That ending is especially haunting now, I agree.

  5. I'm on the wait list for I'll Be Gone in the Dark. I love that they finished the book after she died and it's amazing they finally arrested him. After Her sounds intriguing - adding it to my TBR.
