Day 20 -- Your views on drugs and alcohol.
As far as drugs go, I'm wholly opposed to the abuse and misuse of prescription and over-the-counter meds. I have no tolerance for the illegal ones. I don't see the appeal of them at all, particularly after seeing some lives ruined and almost ruined because of them. Please read Josh Hamilton's book "Beyond Belief" for a glimpse inside the mind of an addict.
When it comes to alcohol, I'm a little more lenient. I think I had my first alcoholic drink when I was 13. I distinctly remember sharing wine coolers with Stephanie Winter. Throughout high school, I only drank when I was with my parents. They were firm believers in letting me learn my limits under their observation. Well, I never really went very far in their house. Wine coolers are pretty light, and I hadn't yet developed a taste for beer. The first time I got drunk was my freshman year in college. I believe Natural Light may have played a role. I've had many more inebriated episodes since then, some of which were embarassing and some of which were just plain fun. I know people who have had trouble controlling their intake of alcohol, and I can see why. It could be very addictive. I could probably stop drinking easily, and I definitely don't drink that often. But a few drinks with friends here and there or the occasional glass of wine or beer after a long day seems pretty healthy.
