The truth about good friends

I am constantly learning about friendship.  Some of the lessons have been hard.  But they've all been necessary in helping me recognize which of my friendships are true and which are only temporary.

Here are a few of the things I've learned in the last few years about what makes a good friend.

A good friend will ...

... support your crazy dreams.

... call you out on your bad behavior.

... tell you you're beautiful (even though you're pretty sure they're biased).

... defend you when others try to hurt you.

... cry with you when you're sad.

... celebrate with you when you're happy.

... know all the right things to say.

... love you at your worst, but work to help you bring out your best.

... pick you up off the bathroom floor when you've had too much to drink.

... encourage your ridiculous crush.

... never give up on you.

I'm fortunate to have some people who live up to all of these things and more.  Sometimes I forget that.  Other times, I look around at the people in my life and wonder how it's possible that they love me.

What do you think defines a good friend?

  1. You know what else defines a good friend to me? When you don't have to talk all the time, but you know that you still love each other and can pick up the phone/tweet/FB at any time and get their love and support. It's not based on quantity, but quality.

  2. Great post! Sometimes it takes a while to weed out the people who are not really those true friends but once it happens you are so happy you did :)

    1. Yep. I have a hard time letting go of relationships...even bad ones (part of being an INFP), but in the long run, I usually realize I'm better off.

  3. A good friend is someone who calmly drives you to Rite Aid for Gatorade and Tylenol while you puke into a hotel trash can.

You left this one wide open. <3

  4. always there through thick and thin, bad choices and good ones. Love and support during life's biggest trials, even if they don't fully understand them, nor know how to help you during them. Just knowing they are around if you need them is really the best thing ever!! Yep, pretty much how I would describe my bestie's behaviors!! :-) She's pretty much awesome!

  5. I love this post. I agree that it's quantity over quality. But when a friend really knows your heart... Without you having to explain everything to them. That's my favorite.
