Pay it forward ... with words

Earlier this year, I talked about wanting to do more random acts of kindness (after being inspired by Holly).  I started out the year pretty strong, but when my life got tough ... well, I got off track.  I completed just four of my planned 24 random acts of kindness.  I suppose there's still time to catch up, and I'll see what I can do.

In the meantime, I've started doing more of one small thing that could be considered an act of kindness.

Yes, I've been complimenting people.

People I work with.
People I know well.
People on Facebook.
People on Instagram.
People I don't know well at all.
Lots of people.

You just never know when that compliment might be the brightest part of a person's day.  Or maybe it could turn their whole day around.  That has certainly happened to me when I received a random compliment, so why wouldn't I want to give that feeling to another person?  Sometimes it can be a bit awkward to compliment someone out of the blue, but I haven't yet regretted it.

That said, I'm not very good at accepting compliments.  I'm working on that though.  I figure if I give enough and hear those responses, maybe I'll learn how to respond as well.

A few of my favorite compliments I've received:

"You really know your baseball."
This might be one of the routes to my heart.

"You make really great playlists."
Again, this will get you right into my heart.

"That [something I wrote] made me laugh/cry/mad."
As a writer, I always strive to evoke emotion.

"You're the best."
Simple and maybe too vague, but it worked.

"You're beautiful in every way."
Although now I know that person was full of it, I loved it at the time.

What's the best compliment you've received?  Or given?

P.S. Make sure you come back to my blog tomorrow for one of my favorite giveaways ever.

  3. Aww I'm glad you are trying to do some RAKs!! I've failed on my regular list of RAKs for the year, but I've been trying to adopt a more positive mindset to my every day activities and that's been helping me not necessarily think about doing RAKs and just letting them happen naturally. It's still hard, though.

Compliments are great!! I can't accept compliments very well either, but I'm working on it. I think the best compliment I've received wasn't just one specific one, but it's anytime I am approached by one of my campers to either pray for them, tell me about a funny thing that happened to them, ask me for advice, or just to talk with me....that means more to me than anything.
