Mind your own biscuits

Last night, I posted this update on two of my social media platforms:

A few people sent me private messages asking if something had happened.  The truth is, there was no specific event that sparked this thought.  More or less, it was a culmination of a lot of updates I've seen on Facebook and Twitter lately.  Maybe you've seen them too. They sound a little like this:

-- Why are people more upset over some lion than any of the other recent killings?

-- People should be more concerned about hunting for sport. It's a real problem.

-- You should boycott all these organizations/companies that donate to Planned Parenthood.

-- You need to worry less about gun control and more about mental health treatments.

-- You need to worry more about who has access to purchasing guns.

-- You are stupid if you support [political candidate name].

And on and on and on.

Seriously, it all makes my head hurt. I'm all for people having an opinion, but there's a difference between sharing your thoughts and lecturing people.  I am seeing more of the latter lately.  At least for now.  I've started "hiding" people on my newsfeed who only seem to post when they want to preach or be condescending.

I'm tired of being lectured. I'm tired of being told how to feel or what to care about.

I am 35 years old, and I think I'm perfectly capable of deciding what I care about and how much I care about it.  Just because I express concern over one issue doesn't mean I'm ignoring the others.  I'm fully capable of multitasking.  I can care about more than one thing at a time.

One commenter on my post made an excellent point when she said this:

If people spent less time judging and more time asking questions and trying to understand we would be a hell of a lot better off in this world.

Even better, I'll default to Kacey Musgraves --

Mind your own biscuits and life will be gravy.

  1. I've been hiding people from my newsfeed like crazy and it makes me so much happier!

  2. YES x 100000 to this post. It's so frustrating. Wish people would take the time to educate themselves, and then have rational conversations rather than dictate.

  3. Absolutely, I agree!! In so many ways, in so many areas of my life. People have been telling me how to think and feel for years and I'm over it, too. Great post!

  4. I saw your post on Twitter and totally agree with what you're saying. Why is it wrong for me to care about one thing just because you care about something else? I mean, I guess it's your business what I care about if I make it your business, but I can't stand the lecturing, the posturing, and the constant barrage of how this cause is somehow more important than that one.

  5. I don't get why people think you can't care about more than one thing at a time. It makes me feel like people on the whole are stupid. I actually wrote something along those lines for my Thursday Thoughts this week.

  6. Yes, yes, and yes! We all have opinions. We're all allowed to have them, but it's exhausting when people make others feel belittled, uneducated, and/or bad about themselves for having their opinions. Why can't we all just agree to disagree and just get along!?

  7. I so agree!! I'm like you and have hidden people in my newsfeed and even muted some on Twitter. I respect everyone's right to have opinions, but shoving it in my face 24/7 has got to stop. :)

  8. Absolutely! Just this morning I succumbed to getting into an facebook exchange that ended with me asking myself "when will I learn?". We are all entitled to our opinions, and as long as people can express them respectfully, I 100% support using your own fb, twitter, blog, etc, to tell us your opinions. But don't tell me I MUST agree with you or I'm a moron!!!!

  9. I completely agree with this! Everything is so IN YOUR FACE these days. I've hidden many friends online because I just don't want to hear about it anymore. I keep up with the news and I have my beliefs and passions, so your posts and reposts are not going to change my mind. A thoughtful discussion might though!
