Show Us Your Books: September

Life According to Steph

I started the month strong, quickly finishing two books. And then I didn't read for a very long time. Sigh. And apparently my theme was September was people who had died or were dying who wanted to make sure their descendants had valuable life information. Interesting.

The start of this book is really rough. After her mother dies, Brett expects to inherit a small fortune as well as the title of president of a major cosmetics company. But her mother has other plans for her daughter ... actually, they're plans Brett had for herself once upon a time. At first, Brett seems very whiny and is hard to like, but as the story winds on, she becomes more relatable. I enjoyed following the challenges her mother set up for her and seeing how it changed her as a person.

Historical romances have always been hit or miss with me. Even if I am fascinated the that particular historical period, a book has to have a lot going for it to keep my interest. This one did just that. Hope travels to a small town in Louisiana to take care of her ailing grandmother's house. Adelaide, the grandmother, has decided it's time to share some untold family history with Hope. I loved the jump back and forth between past and present. The grandmother was charming and sweet, and I was dying to see what other family secrets would be uncovered.

In October, I feel like I should read some kind of thriller. It's been a while since I checked out that genre. Any recommendations?

  1. I don't know either of these! I do love a good thriller or mystery novel though, so I hope you find something good. I love the series by M.J. Arlidge but if you don't want a series - Black-Eyed Susans is pretty good. I read that one recently.

  3. The Wedding Tree sounds like a similar book that I read this month, too! I love historical romance novels!

  4. I like the idea of the first one but find whiny characters almost intolerable immediately. Still worth a try?

Suspense/thrillers are my preferred genre. I like the Ingrid Thoft Fina books and the Linda Castillo Kate Burkholder series.

  5. Historical romance isn't really my typical read but I'm trying to mix-up my genres so I'm adding The Wedding Tree to my TBR. Sounds like a good change-of-pace book.

  6. I remember really liking The Wedding Tree! I can be picky about historical books too (except WWII, I pretty much will read anything related to that.)

  8. I like Mary Higgins Clark books but I always feel like an old lady for some reason when I read them. Maybe that's because a lot of old women read them when I worked at the public library lol. They're kind of "suspense lite"!

  9. For thrillers, you can't go wrong with Chevy Stevens or Paul Cleave. Karin Slaughter is good, too.

  10. Haven't heard of either of these - I'll have to check them out. I like suspense/thriller but usually just fall into them rather than sticking with a favorite author or character.

  11. The Wedding Tree sounds really good. Adding it to my TBR. I can't help with Thrillers as I always say I should read some... and then rarely do. Ha Good luck with your search! :) XO - Alexandra

  12. I liked I Let You Go, The Good Widow, and The Breakdown. I like the genre but sometimes it gets to be repetitive.
