WLJ: Budgets and habits

In July, I took a look at my budget and realized I would not have enough funds to do fitness classes for the summer session.  I was really sad.  I knew I would miss Zumba, and I had been wanting to try a few of the other classes on the schedule.  But I just couldn't make it work.  Not when I had so many things coming up and some debt I wanted to work on paying down.

Honestly, I was a little worried my progress would slow.  And I was more worried that I would lack ambition to work out if I came home instead of going straight to the fitness center.  There were a few days when that was true, but there were far more days that I was excited to get home, change clothes and hit the trail.  Running or walking - it didn't matter.  I just wanted to get out there. That's when I realized my new fitness habits had become more permanent in my life.  And that was a really good feeling.

When August started, I set out to walk three miles a day.  I've missed a few days of that, but most days I walk four or five.  I honestly think if I add it all up, I can probably average it out to equal at least that.   But I don't like math and really don't want to do all that work. So, I'll just assume I did. That works better for me.  Ha ha.

The month is almost over, so I'll be in search of a new fitness challenge soon.  Anyone have any ideas?

I'm hoping to go back to Zumba a little too.  I don't need the fitness classes, but I want them.  I miss shaking my hips, twirling and dancing. I want that back in my life.  I'm going to figure out a way to make that happen.

Weight-loss goal: 40 lbs.
This week's progress: - 2 lbs.
Progress to date: -32 lbs.
Non-scale victory: I had a really emotional Saturday, and I resisted the urge to go buy junk food and eat my feelings.  Instead, I talked to friends and went for a nice six-mile walk in the rain. I'm not going to say it was better than eating a cupcake, but my mood improved by the time I went to bed.

  1. Such a good non-scale victory! And for a new fitness challenge, have you ever tried yoga? It's definitely not cheap to take the classes regularly, but you could try a DVD! In January I told myself I'd go once a week for a month to give it a fair chance and I have been doing that ever since! It's really great for muscle toning and strength but I mostly appreciate its mental calming.

  2. You did way better....I ate my feelings...on Saturday and Sunday. I decided that I would stop that and instead channel my emotions into working out and riding and walking and running from now on. Much healthier. I am very proud of you!!!

  3. I know a lot of cable companies have "on-demand" and they have fitness classes on there!

  4. Love that you did so awesome with your walking goal for August! Also, what a fantastic 'non scale' victory- emotional eating is something I'm really, really bad at...or good at depending on how you're looking at it!! ;)So your accomplishment is certainly inspiring to me!

I'm with Jenn and Amber- I LOVE yoga lately and I know that my 'on demand' has a lot of great fitness classes (including yoga) on there. I know netflix has some good videos too :)

  5. I'd be down for a yoga challenge - I'm definitely not a limber as I used to be!

  6. I never walk around here by myself because you really never know when a moose or bear will pop up. I have a pistol, but that's not gonna do much against those animals!
So yes, I rely on the gym and I aim to get my money's worth every month. I always feel better when I get out of the house and do something. The couch is just too darn inviting! Awesome progress :)
