Runner to Runner: Jennie

As I close in on my first half-marathon, I decided to interview some fellow runners. I enjoy learning about other people's habits and I guess my reporter instincts aren't dead just yet.  For the next few weeks, you'll learn more about some of the ladies who inspire me to keep running.

Week 1: Tamara
Week 2: Nicole
Week 3: Jen
Week 4: Holly

I've saved Jennie for last. Why? Well, she's the one who got me into this mess. Running, that is. Several years ago, when we were living in the same town, she convinced me to sign up for a 5K with her.  The fact that the only running I'd ever done was required by my P.E. teacher didn't seem to deter Jennie.  She was determined to prove that I not only could run, but that I would like it.  Well, Jennie, you were right.  And now, here we are.  On the day of my first half, Jennie will be running the full marathon.  I'm super excited to see her and maybe catch a pic with her after we've both crossed the finish.

((Sorry I have no photo of Jennie for this post.))

How long have you been running?
I started running in junior high…..25+ years ago.  I ran in high school.  Mostly sprints.  After high school I took a long break from running.  Just started again in 2008.

How did you get started?
I was going through a divorce and wanted to do something for me. I tried running around the block and made it maybe 30 seconds.  Then I used the C25K program.

What is your favorite thing about running?
Time to myself.  Time to think about everything and nothing.  The feeling I have when I am done is the most amazing feeling.  Especially after running a race.

Favorite race you’ve done?
Probably the most recent.  I got first in my age group in my home town.

What is your proudest running achievement so far?
Running 20 miles.  I’m training for a marathon and I just did a 20 mile training running this past weekend.  It is amazing to know that your body can do something like that. (Jennie sent this a few weeks ago, by the way, so I'm sure she's beyond that distance now.)

What’s your preferred pre-run fuel?
For long runs – runs over 9 miles…..I like to have 3 small pancakes with syrup and 2 eggs with a little bit of cheese.

What’s your favorite post-run treat?
A tall glass of ice cold water!

What do you carry with you during a run?
On runs under 5, I just have one hand held water bottle that also holds my phone.  On long runs, I have two hand held water bottles.  One holds my phone the other holds Gatorade chews.

Describe your race day ritual.
Wake up, eat, drink at least 32 ounces of water and try like heck to successfully use the bathroom!  There is nothing worse than having to go while in the middle of a race!

Any advice for me as I prepare for my first half-marathon?
Remember that it is not your legs giving out, it is your mind giving up.  Running involves so much mental toughness.  Your body can do whatever your mind tells it to.

What advice would you give new runners or those thinking about getting started?
Do it!  It is good for your body and mind.  I don’t run to get skinny.  That’s the wrong reason.  I run for my own health and  so I don’t go crazy!

Last week in Micah's workouts
Friday: 5.15 miles
Saturday: Off
Sunday: 11-mile trail run
Monday: Off
Tuesday: Off. (Chose rest over regularly-scheduled run)
Wednesday: 3-mile trail run
Thursday: Off.

My legs felt really tired this week, so I've been trying to keep moving but take it easy. I'm also starting to get really nervous and doubtful.  Thank goodness for sweet Holly, who sent me a note of encouragement and a Texas Rangers headband to wear during my race.

NINE days to go!
