The way to my heart

Valentine's Day is around the corner. I don't expect any flowers or proclamations of love, but just in case I do have any secret admirers out there, I thought I'd offer a few tips for how to win me over.

Instead of flowers ...

... send me an Edible Arrangement.
Flowers are pretty, and I do enjoy them but they die after a few days. At least I could eat the fruit in an Edible Arrangement.

Instead of chocolates ...
Snagged from the Facebook page of Beer Crazy, a great local craft beer source.
... make me a six pack of craft beers.
I'm always interested in trying new brews. And I'd probably invite you to sample them with me. Bonus points if you know and include one of my favorites.

Instead of a teddy bear ...
 ... buy me a book.
Maybe it's one of your favorites. Maybe it's something I've mentioned wanting to read. Or maybe it's just one you thought I'd like. Regardless, new books are always good gifts.

Instead of dinner at a fancy restaurant ...
Who wants to split some Guru nachos with me?
... let's go to a local spot -- favorite or new.
I would love another turn at Guru BBQ to try the brisket nachos or any of their smoked meats. I've still not been to Baru 66, Centro, or Malo either.

Instead of a big night out ...
... take me to a hockey game.
I've become a big Iowa Wild fan, and an evening at the rink sounds better than something for which I need to dress up or be quiet. I would much rather be among my rowdy new hockey friends watching my favorite boys of winter. And don't be offended if I wear my Brett Sutter shirt. He's the reason I've grown to love the game so much, but he's on the ice and you're next to me, so really, you win.  I haven't made it to a Des Moines Buccaneers game yet, but I'm definitely open to it.

Or you can save the fanfare for my favorite upcoming holiday ... Major League Baseball's Opening Day.  Recognizing the beauty and wonder of that day is a surefire way to get to me.

  1. Um, YES to every single one of these! I haven't been to a hockey game in YEARS, and my s/o is a huge fan, so that would probably be on top of my list. And I always love local spots where I know the food is delicious and I don't have to get all dolled up than some new, fancy schmancy place. But honestly, I would prefer all of your alternatives to those "traditional" presents.

  2. Tes! I'd totally rather have tickets to some event, books, or go out to a fun restaurant over any other kind of cheesy Valentine gift.

  3. I wholeheartedly agree with all of this! Well, except for the beer since I don't drink. But otherwise? YES!
