I attended my 200th concert.
It sounds like a lot, and I suppose it is.
I go to concerts like most people go to movies. I definitely see more shows a year than I see movies. For instance, this year, I've been to three movies in the theater. I've been to 14 shows. And that feels like kind of a slow year for me.
Perhaps the most mind-blowing part of this milestone is that I've done it all in 17 years. That's right. I didn't attend my first show until I was 17 years old, a senior in high school. I went with my friends, Betsy and Sarah, to see Michael Peterson of "Drink, Swear, Steal, & Lie" fame at a country bar in Des Moines. I even got to meet Mr. Peterson that night, which may have set unrealistic expectations for the rest of my concert-going life.
Or maybe not.

I've actually met a lot of the musicians I've seen live. That's because I count every show in my concert history -- from the local band at the bar down the street where there might be 50 people there and only a handful are paying attention to the band to the big productions at venues that hold tens of thousands of people singing and dancing along. Every one of these shows matters. I enjoy the small shows just as much as the large shows. I've had just as much fun watching a guy with a guitar as I have taking in a full band with pyrotechnics and background dancers.
Wondering who all I've seen? Lucky for you, I've kept a word document that lists everyone I've seen as well as where and when.

You might notice there are a lot of repeats. I'm often asked if it's boring seeing the same act over and over. My answer? Never. No two shows are the same. Even if it's the same tour, there's usually something about that show that makes it stand out. (By the way, you can see who I've seen the most in this post and this post. The numbers for a few of them have changed some, but the rankings remain the same.)
There's probably a lot of names in there you don't know. But you should. I know I said all shows are equal, but I confess I do have a special love and a dedicated space in my music heart for the independent acts. The ones who ravel by car or conversion van. The ones who sign autographs for an hour or more after their set has ended even though they have a six-hour drive to their next city. There are some really special people in this group, and as much as I like their accessibility, I want big things for them. I want them to succeed and for the masses to appreciate them.
There's no doubt about it -- I'm a live music fiend. I absolutely love it. I wouldn't trade any of the above-mentioned concert tickets and experiences for anything.
The 90s love that is the start of your list has childhood me so happy!
ReplyDeleteThis is so cool! I have a list of who I've seen and all my ticket stubs, but I've never actually sat down to see how many concerts I've attended. (Here's my list: http://www.easilyentertainedblog.com/p/concerts.html). And I also didn't go to my first concert until the summer before senior year. So similar! I've only met only four bands though (Phantom Planet, Reel Big Fish, The Specials, and Orgy) and never got pictures. So, so cool! Love this post. Love live music!
ReplyDeleteAlso, who's someone you haven't' seen yet that you're dying to?
ReplyDeleteI don't even have a clue how many concerts I've been to and it's nowhere NEAR 200. I don't even think it's near 50, honestly. But I do enjoy concerts. I should go to more of them.
ReplyDeleteWow!!! That's an awesome milestone to hit!! And I'm so impressed you've met so many artists--I've met a few but these are just really awesome.
